Each year a select group is invited to join the one-year educational "journey toward mastery." Selection is based on evidence applicants provide to demonstrate their lived experience of facilitating and embodying effective behaviors and competencies that reflect:
At the end of the year, participants may choose to deepen their experience of lifelong learning through continuing membership in the learning community of the Center for Nursing Leadership. The curriculum involves learning partnerships, computer conferencing, educational retreats, mentoring, distance learning and action research. The Center’s learning guides serve as coaches. Faculty guides offer specific content, like Asian and African healing traditions, circle practices for shared leadership, and the formal negotiation process. The outcome is the creation of a vital learning community for developing and strengthening key competencies needed for effective leadership in the changing health care environment. Members not only learn functional skills which influence the external world, but also transformational skills which influence the internal world of values, beliefs, and spirit.
What is different about the learning through CNL? Center methodologies emphasize self-directed, participative learning methods, including:
Center faculty are defined as "Learning Guides." This role is primarily one of coach, guide and facilitator. The role of the participant, or community member, is to learn, to dialogue with learning guides as facilitators, to co-create the program, to practice a shared leadership form, and to explore solutions to the problems the community brings to the Center. Linkage of the participants is key—with others in the field, as well as experts who are outside the field. Center activity will not be viewed as a "program" but as an experience. Center participants are "partners for life" in this learning process. The distance learning portion of this curriculum includes electronic mail, computer conferencing, teleconferencing, and learning packets. Learning methodologies are varied, ranging from seminars to face-to-face discussions, computer-based and electronic mail discussions and teleconferences. The Center’s curriculum is intended to "stretch the best." This is accomplished by clustering resources, learning groups and smaller learning communities of educational resources who will help facilitate the process of "discovery" for the participants. Center architects and program participants create an intentional "learning community." Among the resources in the learning community are:
In every possible instance, participants are encouraged to select the learning methods which are best for them.
